As Picasso famously said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
The fabulous “Tête de femme (Dora Maar)” by Mr. Pablo Picasso
Energy, personality and freedom is what it’s all about!
I always get surprised if I hear someone say they’re not an artist or they’re not creative. We are ALL artists and we are ALL creative. It’s in our very nature of being, creating is an instinctual thing, it’s in our core. It is a freedom of expression, an emotion, a desire, a perspective. Even if for example two people were to paint the same subject with the same materials, the two paintings will never look the same, because the two people are not the same. Isn’t it wonderful? Everyone has their own unique vantage point and this is abundance, this is richness. There is joy in encouraging each others creativity and seeing the beauty in diversity. We can learn so much from each other and about each other and about ourselves through art.

Art is the freedom of expressing how you feel, in any way you want. Art is your personal point of view and no one needs to teach you how to do it, it comes from within and is based on emotions and desires. Of course you can learn techniques, materials and such if you want, you are free to choose what you want to create, in whatever way you like, you love. Choose what you want to express and how. Art is an exploration, an evolving, never-ending path, you choose your steps that lead the way. This is why I LOVE art, there are no rules, there can be no rules. Art is an opinion, an expression, a feeling, a moment in time creation.

We can easily see that we are all natural artists when we look at children creating art, they are usually very free, getting on with making something, doing what they want, what they feel. They usually take it easy, have fun and don’t overthink it. This is being in a state of flow, letting go and just creating! Be happy, don’t worry.

There are no mistakes. Art is confidence, belief. Believe in what you’re doing, in what you’re creating. Like what you make and be proud of it, this is why you are doing it. It is a joyous thing, enjoy it, love it. Make it a spiritual practice if you want, make it therapeutic if you need, make it meditative if you wish, be free to be in your own world.

Some of my favourite artists are ones that have challenged “conventional” thinking about art at the time. They opened art up and peoples way of thinking, way of seeing. I love seeing something that awakens something inside me, inspires me, or perhaps changes or deepens my thoughts on something. It gets my pulse pumping faster and my heart expanding. Art is enriching, enriching our lives. Art is connection. Art can bring us together and share experiences.

Art can be a million things, there is abstract art, installations, very detailed almost photographic-like art, sculptures, impressionism, the fauves, dadaism, graphic, performance art, photography, land art, Arte Povera, Italian renaissance art, modern art, etc etc etc I could go on and on, so many names so many different styles. There are people who like to be in categories and people who don’t. It’s a very personal thing and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Art takes courage, courage to do it, to show something from inside. What type of art is in your head? In your heart? In your soul and being?
Sometimes people think “good” art is art which sells, but this way of thinking can be very limiting, there’s so much more to take into consideration. For example Vincent van Gogh, one of the most loved & famous artist today whose paintings sell for millions, only sold one painting in his lifetime. If some well-meaning people say discouraging remarks about our creations along our way, pay no attention, there is no reason to listen to anyone but yourself and do as you please. Remember you are an artist, we all are, so let’s see what amazing things we can create with love in our hearts and freedom in our minds 😀
Vincent Van Gogh “Sunflowers”
Here are some of my favourite quotes from some of my favourite artists:
Matisse said ” Creativity takes courage.”
Claude Monet “Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love.”
Vincent van Gogh “I feel there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.” and also “Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter’s soul.”
Cezanne ” A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.” and also ” If I think, everything is lost.”
Leonardo da Vinci “All our knowledge has its origins in our perceptions.” and “Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.” “Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.”
Paul Gauguin “I shut my eyes in order to see.”
Mark Rothko “I am not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom and so on.” and “I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions. And the fact that a lot of people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate these basic human emotions.” and “Art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored only by those willing to take risks.”
Helen Frankenthaler “One of the first rules is no rules.” and “There are no rules. That is how art is born. How breakthroughs happen. Go against the rules or ignore the rules. That is what invention is about.” and “One really beautiful wrist motion, that is synchronized with your head and heart, and you have it. It looks as if it were born in a minute.”
Georgia O’keefe “To create one’s world in any of the arts takes courage.” and “Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing.” and “I decided to start anew, to strip away what I had been taught.”
James Whistler “For art and joy go together, with bold openness, and high head, and ready hand – fearing naught and dreading no exposure.”
Yoko Ono ” Art is my life and my life is art.” and “It is better to dance than to march through life.”
David Hockney “Art has to move you.” and ” I’m coming ’round to the view that there’s only a personal view of the world.”
J.M.W Turner “It is only when we are no longer fearful that we begin to create.”
Henri Rousseau ” When I go out into the countryside and see the sun and the green and everything flowering, I say to myself Yes indeed, all that belongs to me!” and “Nothing makes me so happy as to observe nature and paint what I see” and “I felt before I thought”
